Can I Complete a Godot 3D Game Jam in 10 Hours?

·231 words·2 mins

This time on ‘Behind the Scenes!’ I talk about my first Godot 3D Game Jam (Go Godot Jam 3 Ultra) with another attempt at making a game in an afternoon, but this time I actually finished! (mostly)

Despite being a lot of fun, and I can finally say I’ve ‘released’ my first game, I found I struggled to really make a video about the process. I’m still not keen on the idea of going into detailed tutorial mode just yet, and a key message just wasn’t jumping out at me (I have other footage like this where the concept is just not there yet).

I guess the real takeaway I landed on was to always think of your player first, and help them where possible. Whether Mario’s hitboxes smaller than the sprites, or my hidden collisions and sentient batteries, your game should not be so difficult as to not be fun!

And I’m realising now after uploading this video I SHOULD have talked about how game jams are a great way to learn to handle scope creep, as the restrictive time limit forces your hand.

Anyway, thanks for watching, and if you want to try and beat my high score 😉 https://gotm.io/beau-seymour/robo-solar

Thanks for reading/watching, and please let me know what you’d like to see next in the comments!
